칼리파 갤러리는 세계적인 이탈리아 아티스트 세르지오 사라Sergio Sarra의 서울에서 첫 번째 개인전
이탈리아 아티스트 Sergion Sarra의 ‘My painting technique’은 작가의 작품의 이론적 기반에 초점을 맞추어 회화를 창조하는 Anrea Carella(2009)의 비디오에서 비롯된 전시제목이다. 전시회는 회화에서 비디오 설치로 이어지는 순간선상에 있다. 세르지오 사라는 전시에서 15개의 일련의 작은 회화들이 갤러리의 긴 벽의 한쪽에 놓이도록 구상했으며 이 프로젝트로 풍경, 건축과 사람에게 내재되어있는 다양한 조합된 이미지 탐험을 수행할 예정이다. 작가에게 있어 ‘My painting technique’은 형이상학과 기법, 자연과 건축, 속도와 비가시성 사이의 관계의 깊이에 대한 자기 성찰적 연구로 구성된다.
“세르지오 사라의 작품세계는 정체불명 혹은 이름 없는 장면들을 철저히 직설적으로 그렸지만 정밀한 선명도나 연어 현상이 없이 그려진 인물들이다. 그것이 감지할 수 없는 변형이나 생성운동의 발현아래에서 탑의 윤곽이 숲의 경계로 변하거나 인물 형태의 실루엣이 별자리로 합쳐지거나 연못이 하늘의 한 조각으로 된다. 형태들은 조용히 매칭되는 흐름을 따르며 하나에서 다른 하나로 재탄생된다. 어떤 격동이나 디테일 혼잡도 존재하지 않는다. 모든 것이 적합한 자리에 있으며 현장은 공허한 극명함 속에서 항상 진지하며 불가사의하다” (Helga Marsala in “Noisy writings. 1997년에 사라는 정해진 주소가 없는 비정기 간행물 “Orlo”를 발간했다. 이것의 주요 특징은 글, 정확한 마감시한이나 출력물이 없으며 오히려 느리고 비밀스럽게 배포되는 것이다. 잡지는 이미지를 창조하기 위해 초대된 전 세계 아티스트들과의 협력으로 만들어진다.
그는 이탈리아 아부르초(Abruzzo)에서 거주하며 작품 활동을 하고 있으며 이곳에서 2015년에 풍경들의 목록을 만들고 연구하고 그리는 “Art and Forest Theories” 사무실을 열었다.
칼리파 갤러리는 국제무대에서 활발히 활동하고 있으나 아직 국내에서 심도 있게 다루어지지 않은 역량 있는 해외의 작가들을 국내에 소개하고 국내의 작가를 해외에 알리는데 교두보 역할을 하고자 한다. 금번전시에서 이탈리아 전문가인 아트앤리얼무브먼트와 공동 기획을 통하여 세르지오 사라의
작품세계를 국내에 처음으로 선보이게 되는 개인전 My painting technique가 관람객들에게 회화에서 비디오 설치로 이어지는 순간선상에 대한 명상의 시간을 제공할 수 있길 기대해 본다.

MY PAINTING TECHNIQUE
Khalifa Gallery is pleased to present “My painting technique”, the first exhibition in Seoul of the Italian artist Sergio Sarra. The title is taken from the video by Andrea Carella (2009) in which the artist creates a painting focusing on the theoretical bases of his work. The exhibition is built around two moments, ranging from painting to video installation.
Sergio Sarra has conceived a series of 15 small paintings placed on one of the long walls of the gallery. With this project the artist conducts an exploration of the multiplicity of combinatorial images that the landscapes, architecture and human figures hide.
Sarra paints “… faceless or nameless scenes, figures drawn in rigorous frankness, but devoid of any precise definition or collocation. …So it goes that – under the thrust of some imperceptible deformation or generative motion – the outline of a tower may well turn into the boundaries of a wood, or the silhouette of an anthropomorphic figure merge into a constellation, or a pond become a piece of sky. Forms are being re-born one from the other, obeying some silent matching drive. There’s no turmoil, no details, no hustle: everything is in its right place, the scene is always sober and impenetrable, relying on its empty obviousness…” (Helga Marsala in “Noisy writings. “My painting technique” is structured as an introspective study in the depths of the relationship between metaphysics and technique; nature and architecture; speed and invisibility.
Sergio Sarra was born in Pescara, Italy in 1961. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna.

In 1997 Sarra founded “Orlo”, a non-periodical magazine with no fixed address. Its main characteristics are the lack of texts, of precise deadlines, output and a rather slow and secret distribution. The magazine is produced in collaboration with artists from around the world who are invited to create an image.
He lives and works in his home studio in Abruzzo, Italy where in 2015 opened “Art and Forest Theories” office for the drawing, study and cataloguing of landscapes.
