■ 전시소개

칼리파 갤러리(Khalifa Gallery)는 오는 8월 5일부터 경일대학교 사진영상학부 교수인 사진작가 최종성의 개인전 <The Mysterious Trees>을 기획했다. 한국 현대사진예술을 선도하는 작가로 평가 받고 있는 최종성은 미국 University of Maine 경제학과를 졸업하고, New York University에서 사진을 공부하였다. 2010년부터 경일대학교 사진영상학과 교수로 재직하고 있다. 또한 2016년 10월7일부터9일까지 올해로 20주년을 맡는 아시아 대표적인 사진행사인 말레이시아 쿠알라룸푸르에서 개최되는 쿠알라룸푸르 사진축제에 초대 되었다.

최종성이 환경 프로젝트로 선택한 여행지 중 한곳이 방글라데시 순다르반 (Sundarban)이다. 과거와 현재가 공존하는 이 지역은 보호구역 특성상 사람의 손길이 닿지 않는 미지의 지역임과 동시에 산업개발과 온난화에 의해 면적이 축소되고 있다. 과거의 모습 그대로 유지하고 있지만 사라져 가는 모순적인 지역인 셈이다. 순다르반은 1987년 유네스코가 지정한 세계문화유산이며 인도와 방글라데시에 걸친 140,000ha의 세계적인 규모를 자랑하는 맹그로브 숲으로 형성되어 있다.

이런 아름답고 신비한 숲은 실제로 변해가는 환경에 적응하기 위해 투쟁하고 있다. 지구온난화로 인한 해수면 상승으로 주변 섬들의 잠식과 습지의 면적이 줄어드는 상황은 마치 이방인의 삶으로서 적응하고자 했던 작가 본인의 과거와도 같은 것이었다.

<신비로운 나무> 시리즈는 아름다운 현재의 자연과 경각심을 불러일으키는 미래의 불안한 자연 두 가지 모습이 공존하고 있다.
