김홍록 Kim Hongrok 진정성회복의 단초 : 맥도날드 展 2013.10.9-10.31

올해 3월, 20년 전 쿠바에서 미국으로 뗏목을 타고 탈 이주한 가족의 사건을 5일간의 퍼포먼스와 설치, 사진, 영상을 통해 관객과 체험을 공유하는 전시를 선보였던 작가 김홍록이 두 번째 개인전으로 다시 찾아온다. 이번 전시는 ‘진정성 회복의 단초 : 맥도날드’로 작가는 전 세계 많은 사람들의 도움으로 20개 국가의 맥도날드 햄버거 포장지를 수거하였고 그 포장지 위에 다이아몬드 더스트를 더한 작품을 선보인다. 작품으로 맥도날드 소재의 선택은 과거 해외 작가들의 자본주의를 비판하기 위한 것과 달리 자본주의의 가치를 긍정적으로 재조명하고자 하는 표현으로 이전의 것들과는 사뭇 다르다 할 수 있다.작가는 아직 사회주의 국가이거나 자본주의가 뿌리 내리지 못하여 경제수준이 낮은 수많은 나라로부터 맥도날드가 없다는 답변을 받았다. 우리가 비판의 대상으로 여기기도 했던 맥도날드 패스트푸드가 일부 나라에서는 접할 수도 없는 것이라고 한다. 작가는 원시안으로 스스로를 다시 바라보아 자본주의의 가치를 긍정적으로 재인식해보고자 한다. 쓰레기인 햄버거 포장지가 다이아몬드를 만나 작품이 되는 것은 누구나 한번 이상 접했을 가벼운 소재에 묵직한 소재를 더함으로 익숙한 우리의 인식의 탈바꿈을 꾀하는 작가의 미술적 표현은 과감하고 거침이 없다.

Korean artist, Hong-Rok Kim, delicately portraying a Cuban family, which escaped its country twenty years ago with revisiting real world situations through whole five days of vivid performances, installations, pictures, and movies in this march, is coming back to us with his second exhibition. The upcoming exhibition, “The recovery of authenticity: McDonald’s”, has been actively supported globally, thus the author successfully collecting McDonald’s wrapping paper from twenty different countries. He will present his creative works, on which diamond dust is elaborately added. The author highlights his thought on positive value of capitalism unlike other foreign artists, who criticized its social role and effect in the past. He received unhappy responses from many people that there is no McDonald’s in their countries due to their low standard of living and lack of opportunity to experience capitalism. The author re-acknowledges the positive value of capitalism by looking back himself. He boldly transforms our thoughts by implicating the weighty topic with routine and trivial pieces of McDonald’s hamburger wrapper.
