가상이미지에 있어서 상실과 서사
나의 작업은 이중구조로 구축한 캔버스에 서로 다른 이미지를 중첩시켜 표현하고 이를 통해 가상이미지에 있어서 상실과 서사를 형상화 한다.
그 방법으로써 관람자의 동선, 즉 움직이는 각도에 따라 화면에 시점변화가 생기도록 캔버스를 이중으로 구조화하고, 두 개의 서로 다른 이미지를 중첩시켜 페인팅 한다. 이는 캔버스의 구조적인 변형에 의해 관람자가 바라보는 각도에 따라 이미지가 변화하도록 유도한 것이다. 캔버스의 이중구조는 평면의 확장성과 이미지의 가상성, 그리고 이미지 상충에 의한 상실과 서사적 사건의 발생 등을 가능하게 하는 것이다.
작품의 제작과정은 다음과 같다. 먼저 캔버스 표면에 두 개의 다른 각도에서 볼 수 있는 면을 이중으로 구조화 한다. 다음은 두 개의 이미지를 차용하거나 선정하여 각각 다른 각도에서 차례로 드로잉과 페인팅을 전개하여 작품화 한다.
전체적으로 각각의 작은 면에 교차하면서 그려진 두 개의 다른 이미지는 각도에 따라 다르게 보여 지는데, 이와 같은 이미지의 변화는 공간의 변화와 시간의 변화를 의미한다. 그리고 그 이미지의 의미도 변화하여 전혀 다른 새로운 의미체계가 형성된다. 관람자의 이동하는 시점은 동적인 움직임을 통해 상호작용의 의미체계를 형성하고, 회화의 이중주 하모니를 만들어 낸다. 또한 상호작용의 의미체계를 통해 서로 다른 이미지가 중첩 또는 충돌하면서 서사적 사건을 발생시키면서 동시에 새로운 이미지가 생성되거나 소멸된다. 이처럼 나의 작업이 주목하는 것은 생성되거나 소멸되는 이미지의 가상성, 양면성 또는 다중성에 의한 본질의 상실, 그리고 서로 다른 이미지가 중첩되거나 충돌하면서 형성되는 서사적 사건들이다. 해체와 생성소멸이 가상이미지의 가시성과 비가시성을 만들어 내고 이것을 통해 다의적 의미작용이 생성된다. 즉 가시성과 비가시성의 양립구조를 통해 가상이미지에 있어서 상실과 서사의 의미가 생성되는 것이다.
이미지의 표현적 방법에서는, 형상성을 다루지만 일루전에 초점을 두지 않는다. 즉 전통적인 재현을 추구하려는 것이 아니라, 새로운 조형방법을 통한 상징적 알레고리의 재현이다. 이것은 시각적 리얼리티를 보여주는 것이 아니라, 우리가 살아가는 동시대의 상실과 서사로서 상징적 알레고리의 리얼리티를 제시하는 것이다. 이를 통해서 회화의 전통적인 형식을 해체하고 조형적인 영역을 확장시키는 의미로서 평면의 공간을 재구성하여 양면성 내지는 다중성의 개념으로 재해석하고, 다의적 의미를 확보하는 것이다.
