보이지 않는 집 2022
그림 위에는 보편적으로 집이라 인지되는 형태와 그와 비슷한 크기의 인간 형상들이 규칙 없이 나열되어 있다. 그 형상은 일종의 기호와 같다. 기억의 흔적이거나 일상 속 눈에 들어온 편린, 선망하는 미래의 단편이 그림 속 기호로 변환된다. 그들은 그 안에서 서로 관계 맺고 새로운 이야기를 만들어 내기도 하고, 혹은 독립적으로 병렬되어 있다.
전통적으로 ‘집’이란 물리적인 충격에서 인간을 보호하고 정서적 안정과 사회화까지 제공하는 기본 단위로 인식된다. 그러나 모든 ‘집’들이 이런 역할을 당연하고 완벽하게 해내고 있는 것은 아니다. 성장기, 가족의 와해가 마치 물질적인 ‘집’마저 휑하니 사라져 버린 것처럼 느끼게 한다는 것을 깨달았던 적이 있다. 그 때부터 집은 집이나 기대하는 집이 아니었고, 온전한 정신적 쉼도 주지 못했다. 역설적이게도 이런 경험이 오히려 ‘집’을 꿈꾸게 한다.
그림 속 집들은 안팎이 없다.
그 위를 넘나드는 ‘인간’은 자유롭고, 생기 있다. 집의 확장된 형태이자 유기적으로 치환된 ‘집’의 다른 모습이다. 그리고 또한 ‘집’의 정체성을 엿볼 수 있게 하기도 한다. 그것들이 연출하는 상황과 선택된 순간은 서로 다른 시간 속에서 채집된 조각들이다. 기억은 행복 추구의 관점으로 각색되는 경향을 살려 긍정적이며 대다수가 바라는 소박한 낙원을 한 장 한 장 펼쳐낸다. 그렇게 만들어진 조각들은 시간을 넘어 같은 공간에서 조우한다. 실존하지 않는 이 공간 속 ‘집’이라는 기호는 현실에서 갖지 못하는 심리적 안식처가 되고, ‘인간’에게는 비로소 원초적 위안을 준다. 부재와 결핍이 선망하는 마음을 낳고, 쉽게 손에 잡을 수 없어 더 절실한 정신적인 집들이 그림 안에서 수많은 기호로 자리 잡는다. 풍족하고 너그러운 마음의 집을 지어 나간다.
